《文献》季刊是文化部主管、国家图书馆主办的国家一级学术性刊物。内容以披露国家图书馆的丰富馆藏和其他公私家典藏的、国内外新近发现的、具有重要价值的各种古、近代文献资料及其研究成果为主。着重发表古文献学、训诂学、校勘学、目录学、版本学、辨伪学、辑佚学等研究论文。同时重视报道海外汉学研究进展。该刊从文献学的角度，为促进和繁荣我国传统文化及其研究事业服务。重要栏目有“北图珍本古籍介绍”、“方志谱牒研究”、“少数民族文献研究”、“古代科技文献研究”、“中国书史”、“中国文化史知识”、“中外文化交流”、“二十世纪文献学”、“国际汉学研究”、“中国当代社会科学家传略”、“博士论文提要”、“名人手札”、“名家题跋”等。
《文献》季刊继承原《国立北平图书馆馆刊》宗旨，学风严谨朴实，获得国内学术界厚爱及海外汉学界重视。国内数家重点大学如北京大学、浙江大学、南京大学等，规定《文献》杂志是该校社科专业核心期刊，南京大学中国社会科学研究中心评之为《中文社会科学引文索引》（CSSCI-2004 ）来源期刊，北京大学《中文核心期刊要目总览》2004 年版著录该刊。
《文献》季刊创刊于1979年，至今累计出版超过一百期。为便利读者参考与利用，2004年11月出版了增刊“百期总目及索引”一书，具备篇名分类索引、作者索引及插图索引，读者可根据需要进行检索。
鉴于早年的《文献》季刊已不易获得，编辑部于1998年委托国家图书馆信息网络部和超星公司制作了“《文献》廿年（1979-1998）纪念”光盘，提供方便的检索方式和全文影像。

《Journal of Documents》sponsored by National Library and managed by Ministry of Culture is one of the most important periodicals in P.R.China. This journal mainly publishes various valuable documents in ancient and modern times, including rare books, uncommon manuscripts, lost notables volumes, prefaces and postscripts, letters, handwritings, rare local records, maps, files, proclamations, inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells and inscriptions on ancient bronzes and stone tablets, sacrificial vessel and epigraphs, bamboo slips in Han Dynasty, lost volumes of Dunhuang, Buddhist sutra and Taoist scriptures, and documents of minority nationalities etc.. Also it mainly carries research papers on classical literature, historical science, classical documentary science and critical interpretation of ancient tests. The essential items consist of introduction to rare books in ancient times, studies on local records and family tree, Chinese history of block printing and collection of books, studies on scientific and technical literature in ancient times, knowledge of Chinese cultural history, studies on literature of minority nationality, history of cultural exchange in China and abroad, documentary science in twentieth century, Studies on international sinology, biographies of social scientists in contemporary China, abstracts of Doctoral dissertations, etc.. The scholars at home and abroad pay great attention to this journal due to its substantial content, detailed and accurate materials and simple style of writing.
